In the Wake of the Mayflower, a conversation with Karen Rinaldo and Kevin Doyle
Visual historian Karen Rinaldo and educator Kevin Doyle will give a talk about a book they co- authored titled In the Wake of the Mayflower. The Pilgrim’s adventure is covered in a vignette style providing in depth research of the Pilgrims arrival in the New World up to the development of the 15 Cape Cod towns.
The book was inspired by a commission Ms Rinaldo received in 1994 by the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches , the “Pilgrims Church” , to create the first historically accurate painting of the First Thanksgiving, 1621.
The information in the painting was sited as historically accurate by Mayflower scholars
and endorsed by both the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian and the Society of Mayflower Descendants . It was highlighted in Scholastic Book , Teaching American History with Art Masterpieces.
Their presentation focuses on the early events of the Pilgrims journey and the mutually beneficial relationship with the native Wampanoag tribe that lasted nearly 50 years before differing interests culminated in King Phillips War .
The book has been deemed an “easy read “. Wampanoag Chief Flying Eagle was pleased that “ finally someone is looking at this period of history with a positive eye.
This 45 minute presentation will allow for questions and conversation following the talk.
The book in its second printing and prints of the painting will be available for purchase.
